WATER JUSTICE

NEW ORLEANS

Building a better, modern stormwater
management solution

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Water Justice New Orleans is a community-driven coalition working to address the city's ongoing drainage crisis through equitable, transparent, and sustainable water policy. Bringing together residents, nonprofits, water experts, and local businesses, the initiative advocates for a drainage system that better serves all communities, particularly those most vulnerable to flooding and climate change.

The project explores how stormwater fees and public investment can fund critical infrastructure improvements while expanding green infrastructure, reducing neighborhood flooding, and promoting environmental equity. At its core, the initiative seeks to make water management more accountable and accessible by giving residents a meaningful role in shaping the policies that affect their neighborhoods.

The goal is to build a healthier, more resilient New Orleans where reliable water infrastructure is treated as a public good and every community has a voice in its future.

What can the water justice fund do for new orleans?

To combat the city’s compounding flooding and climate challenges, The Water Justice Fund will:

1.Develop a funding stream where everyone pays into the drainage system, including nonprofits, state agencies, and businesses that don’t pay a water bill;

2. Create a collaborative one-water governance model that consolidates and democratizes drainage leading to more local oversight and transparency measures for current and future funding;

3.Create a dedicated fund to support green infrastructure expansion through a variety of programs;

4. Expand a new and growing workforce in blue/green economy jobs and climate technology.
